Siena sits on three low hills in the heart of Tuscany, its brick streets still winding through the boundaries of the old medieval city wards, or contrade. At the centre, the shell-shaped Piazza del Campo slopes gently down toward the Palazzo Pubblico and its slender Torre del Mangia. Twice a year the square fills with sand and crowds for the Palio, a bareback horse race between the contrade that has shaped local identity for centuries. Just uphill, the striped marble façade of Siena Cathedral opens onto a nave covered in inlaid marble floor panels and frescoed ceilings. Away from the main square, the streets narrow into a maze of alleys, courtyards, and small squares, each contrada marking its territory with flags and symbols. Kitchens around the city serve pici, a thick hand-rolled pasta, alongside panforte, a dense spiced cake tied to the city's trading past. Beyond the walls, the Crete Senesi countryside unfolds in bare clay hills, cypress-lined roads, and vineyards that supply the wine cellars of the surrounding Chianti and Montalcino districts.
