Lausanne rises in terraces above Lake Geneva, its old town linked by steep streets and stairways down to the shore. Below, the Ouchy district spreads along the waterfront, with gardens, a small harbour, and a promenade that follows the shore toward Vevey and Montreux.

As seat of the International Olympic Committee, Lausanne carries the title of Olympic capital, and the Olympic Museum gathers artefacts and archives from the modern Games. Away from the lake, the Collection de l'Art Brut holds one of Europe's notable archives of outsider art. Each summer, the Festival de la Cité fills the old town's squares and courtyards with theatre, music, and open-air performance.

Vineyards line the slopes east along the lake toward Vevey, part of a wine-growing tradition that has shaped this shore for centuries.
