Barbate sits on the Atlantic coast of Cádiz province, close to Cape Trafalgar. The town is built around a working tuna port, with net stores and ice houses lining the quays alongside the marina, giving Barbate a practical, unpolished character.
Sandy beaches run along the coast toward Zahara de los Atunes, backed by dunes and low scrub. Cape Trafalgar lies a short way along the shore, its lighthouse marking the site of the 1805 naval battle between British and combined Spanish and French fleets. Inland, the hilltop town of Vejer de la Frontera rises above the plain, its whitewashed houses visible across the surrounding countryside.
