Comporta sits on the Sado estuary, where flooded rice paddies stretch toward dune-backed pine forest and a wide Atlantic beach. The village grew up around rice farming, and the fields still frame its approach, green through summer and gold before harvest.

The surrounding estuary draws herons and other wading birds across its mudflats and saltpans. Inland, vineyards produce wines that have earned growing recognition, and several estates open their cellars for tastings.

The beach at Praia da Comporta runs along fine white sand backed by dunes, with wooden boardwalks protecting the fragile plants that hold them in place. Small restaurants serve grilled fish and rice dishes built on what comes from the fields and waters nearby. Comporta has drawn increasing attention in recent years, yet rice warehouses, irrigation channels, and open horizon still shape its daily rhythm.
