Bevagna sits in the Umbrian valley, built on the site of the Roman town of Mevania. Its central square, Piazza Silvestri, is framed by Romanesque churches and lined with quiet stone houses. A short walk away, a Roman mosaic marks the site of the town's ancient baths. Vineyards and olive groves surround the town, and several family-run estates open their cellars and presses for tastings. Each June, Bevagna's residents cook, craft, and dress as they did in the Middle Ages for the Mercato delle Gaite festival, turning the streets into a working medieval town for a few days. The town's medieval walls remain largely intact and can be walked in stretches, offering views over the fields and hills beyond. The stone lanes and small piazzas still follow the rhythm of daily life, with little of the crowding found in Umbria's better-known hill towns.
