Monreale sits above Palermo, overlooking the Conca d'Oro valley. Its cathedral is lined inside with gold mosaics covering the walls and vaulted ceiling. The adjoining cloister holds a quiet garden ringed by carved stone columns. The cathedral is counted among Sicily's Arab-Norman monuments.
Beyond the cathedral, Monreale is a working hill town surrounded by vineyards and olive groves. Narrow streets climb past bakeries and small trattorias serving Sicilian dishes built on citrus and olive oil. Local producers make wine from grapes grown on the slopes nearby, and tastings are easy to find in cellars close to town.
