Würzburg lies on the Main river in Franconia, with the Marienberg Fortress rising on one bank and the Würzburg Residence anchoring the other. The Residence, a UNESCO World Heritage site, houses a grand staircase hall beneath a ceiling fresco by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, and its gardens open onto views across the city. The fortress above the vineyards holds a museum of Franconian history and gives a wide view over the rooftops and the river below.

The hills around the city grow Silvaner, Franconia's signature grape, and the dry white wines are served in the Weinstuben scattered through the old town. The Alte Mainbrücke, lined with sandstone statues of saints, fills each evening with people holding a glass of wine over the water. Near the Marktplatz, half-timbered houses line narrow streets that lead to the Romanesque Dom St. Kilian.

Wine festivals bring the harvest into the squares in late summer and autumn, and the Residenzplatz hosts markets through the year.
