Innsbruck sits in the Inn valley, with the limestone wall of the Nordkette rising directly behind the old town. As the capital of Tyrol, the city carries a long Habsburg history, visible in the Golden Roof that marks the centre of the Altstadt and the nearby Hofburg palace. Narrow streets lined with pastel façades open onto the squares of the old town.
The mountains are never far. Cable cars climb from the city edge into the Nordkette range, and trails continue from where the lifts stop.
