St. Margarethen im Burgenland sits at the edge of the Leitha hills, close to Lake Neusiedl in Burgenland's wine country. Its Roman quarry, worked since antiquity, supplied stone for St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna and later became one of Austria's more unusual cultural venues. Each summer the quarry's stone walls form the backdrop for the Opera im Steinbruch festival, staging productions in an open-air amphitheater carved from rock. The same site hosts an international sculpture symposium, where artists work the stone on location and finished pieces stay in place afterward, scattered across the quarry grounds as a permanent open-air gallery. Away from the quarry, the village keeps a quieter rhythm, with cellar lanes where local growers pour their own wine. Vineyards cover the low hills around the settlement, part of the wine country that stretches toward the lake below. The combination of ancient stone, live opera, and wine gives St. Margarethen a character distinct from other Burgenland villages.
