Eisenstadt is the capital of Burgenland, in eastern Austria, built around the baroque Esterházy Palace. The palace was home to the Esterházy princely family and the workplace of composer Joseph Haydn, who led the family's orchestra for decades. Its sweeping staterooms and concert hall remain the heart of the city, and the hall's acoustics still host performances today.
The old town spreads out from the palace in narrow streets lined with low baroque houses. The Haydn House, where the composer once lived, keeps his instruments and manuscripts.
Eisenstadt sits within a wine-growing area, and taverns around the old town pour local wines alongside local dishes. Lake Neusiedl lies a short distance east, and its shallow waters shape the mild climate that also favors the surrounding vineyards. The city carries its history lightly, still working as a state capital with government offices, schools and daily life woven through the historic streets.
