Vitznau.

Vitznau sits on the northern shore of Lake Lucerne, where the water narrows between wooded hills and the lower slopes of Rigi rise close behind the village. A mild, sheltered microclimate lets palms, magnolias and other plants more typical of southern Europe grow along the lakefront, giving Vitznau a softer feel than much of inland Switzerland. Grand hotels built during the era of Swiss lake tourism still line the waterfront, their gardens running almost to the water.

The lake shapes daily life here. Small landing stages hold rowing boats and paddleboats, and houses along the shore keep gardens that spill down to the waterline. Behind the village, orchards and meadows climb toward Rigi, a mountain known for the wide views from its summit over the lake and the peaks beyond. In the hills above Vitznau, small dairy farms continue a cheesemaking tradition common to this lake region, and some open their doors for tastings.

Narrow lanes hold wood-shuttered houses and a modest parish church, while restaurants along the promenade serve lake fish and traditional Swiss dishes. Despite the grand hotel architecture, Vitznau keeps the rhythm of a lakeside village rather than a resort, with washing lines and vegetable patches visible between the flower beds.
