Boltigen.

Boltigen sits in the upper Simmental, a wide green valley in the Bernese Oberland where dark-timbered chalets line pastures grazed by red-and-white Simmental cattle. The valley floor is flat and farmed, framed by steep slopes that climb toward the Jaunpass, which separates the Simmental from the Gruyère region beyond. Dairy farming shapes the rhythm of the place: barns stand close to the houses, hay meadows are cut through summer, and small farms sell cheese and butter directly at the gate.

The wooden houses around the village centre and along the valley road show the carved facades and deep eaves typical of Bernese Oberland building. Marked paths lead from the village through forest and pasture toward the Jaunpass and into side valleys, opening views back over the Simmental floor. In winter, the same lower slopes and meadows are groomed for cross-country skiing.

Boltigen keeps a working character: cattle graze near the houses, church bells mark the day, and farm life continues alongside a handful of guesthouses and shops. The pastures and timber architecture of the wider Simmental spread out on both sides of the village.
