Ribadeo sits where the Eo River widens into the Cantabrian Sea, forming the estuary that separates Galicia from Asturias. The town grew wealthy from emigrants who returned from Latin America in the early twentieth century, and their money shaped the old center: tall indiano houses with glassed-in galleries and ornate façades, built alongside the harbor where fishing boats still dock. A promenade traces the waterfront, looking out over the wide estuary toward the hills on the Asturian side.
