Vilanova i la Geltrú lies on the Catalan coast south of Barcelona, where the Garraf hills meet the sea and the vineyards of Penedès begin just inland. The town grew around a working fishing port, and the daily catch still reaches the stalls of the harbour market. Its old quarter mixes narrow lanes with wider streets built during a period of 19th-century maritime trade.

The Museu del Ferrocarril de Catalunya, set on a former railway depot, traces the history of trains in Spain and draws steam-engine enthusiasts alongside casual visitors. Along the shore, the Platja Llarga and a scatter of smaller coves give the town several stretches of sand, lively in summer and calm for walking the rest of the year.

Inland, Penedès wineries produce much of Catalonia's cava, and tastings pair naturally with a walk through vineyard rows that turn gold at harvest time. Each August, the Festa Major fills the old town with music and fireworks, drawing residents and visitors from along the coast.
