Peñafiel.
A ship-shaped castle above the vineyards of Ribera del Duero.

Peñafiel sits above the Ribera del Duero, its long, narrow castle running the length of a ridge like the hull of a ship. Below the battlements, the fortress holds the province's wine museum, tracing the region's wine-making history through barrel-lined chambers and towers. The old town spreads at the foot of the castle rock, centred on the Plaza del Coso, an oval square lined with wooden balconies that has long hosted bullfighting festivals. Stone houses with covered arcades line the streets nearby, many built for merchants who once traded in wine and wool. Vineyards cover the hills in every direction, planted mostly with Tempranillo, known locally as Tinta del País, the grape behind the reds that have made Ribera del Duero one of Spain's most respected wine regions.
