Santander is the capital of Cantabria, set on a wide bay where the Atlantic opens into a natural harbour framed by green hills. The city grew around its fishing and trading port, and that maritime character still shapes its streets, promenades, and markets. El Sardinero, the long urban beach, gives Santander a resort feel, while the Palacio de la Magdalena sits above the water, surrounded by its gardens. The Centro Botín, an art centre on the waterfront, sits between the old town and the harbour. Santander's cuisine draws on both sea and mountain: anchovies, sardines, and shellfish from the bay appear alongside Cantabrian cheeses and stews from the inland valleys. Behind the city, the land rises quickly into green hills and, further south, the peaks of the Picos de Europa.
