Tavira sits on the Gilão River in the eastern Algarve, its two halves joined by a stone bridge lined with orange trees and riverside cafés. Whitewashed houses with tiled roofs climb from the water toward a hilltop castle, where garden walls are what remain of an earlier Moorish and medieval stronghold. The town includes several historic churches, among them Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo. Azulejo tiles cover many façades, part of Portugal's long ceramic tradition. Fishing still shapes daily life along the riverfront, where small boats moor near the market halls. Ilha de Tavira, a long barrier-island beach, lies just offshore, its sand backed by dunes and open sky. The historic center is a tangle of narrow lanes and small squares, quieter than the busier resorts along the coast.
