Alkmaar sits among the canals of North Holland, its center shaped by the cheese trade of the Dutch Golden Age. The Waag, once a weighing house for cheese merchants, still anchors the main square, and the tradition continues each week when the Friday cheese market fills it with wheels of Gouda and Edam, carried on wooden barrows by porters in colored guild hats. Around the square, narrow streets lead past gabled townhouses, small museums, and hofjes — quiet courtyards once built as almshouses, tucked behind unmarked doors. The Grote Kerk, a Gothic church with a tower open to climbers, looks out over the rooftops and the canals that loop through the old town.

Cheese shops line the streets near the market square, selling wheels aged in their own cellars alongside other regional products. Beyond the center, the land opens into dunes and wide beaches along the North Sea coast, and the windmills of Zaanse Schans lie a short distance to the south. Alkmaar's rhythm follows its market: brisk on Friday mornings, then settling back into the calm of an ordinary Dutch canal town for the rest of the week.
