Appiano
sulla Strada del Vino.

Appiano sulla Strada del Vino (Eppan an der Weinstraße in German) is the most wine-rich municipality in all of South Tyrol, spread across a sun-drenched plateau south of Bolzano at around 400 meters elevation. The mild Mediterranean-influenced microclimate allows grapevines, apple orchards, and even palm trees to thrive alongside the Alps. The area is remarkable for its density of castles — over 25 fortresses and manor houses are scattered among the vineyards, including Hocheppan Castle perched on a rocky crag with frescoed Romanesque chapel and sweeping views. The three small lakes of Monticolo offer surprisingly warm swimming in summer. Local wineries produce outstanding Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio, and Sauvignon, and the many wine estates welcome visitors for tastings. The combination of medieval history, world-class wine, and alpine scenery makes Appiano uniquely appealing.
