Noto is a baroque town in southeastern Sicily, rebuilt in golden limestone after an earthquake destroyed the original town in 1693. Grand palaces and churches line Corso Vittorio Emanuele, the town's main street, which glows amber in the late afternoon light. The Cathedral of San Nicolò anchors one end of the corso, and Palazzo Nicolaci is known for its elaborately carved stone balconies. In May, the street fills with flower petals arranged into large temporary pictures for the Infiorata festival. Around the town, limestone hills carry vineyards where Nero d'Avola grapes ripen in the Mediterranean sun, and several estates open their cellars for tastings. Small restaurants and gelaterias line the old streets, serving Sicilian dishes alongside the local wine. The stone weathers to warm gold and amber tones, and the town's look shifts with the light through the day.
