Dresden sits on the Elbe River in the heart of Saxony, its skyline shaped by sandstone domes and courtyards rebuilt after wartime destruction. The Frauenkirche, reconstructed stone by stone from salvaged fragments, stands again over the Neumarkt, while the Zwinger Palace holds collections of porcelain, armor, and Old Master paintings gathered by the Saxon electors. Across the river, the Baroque quarter of the Neustadt mixes restored courtyards with workshops and small galleries, giving the old town a quieter counterpart.
The Elbe meadows thread through the city, with paths following the water past villas and vineyard slopes that produce some of Germany's northernmost wine. Beyond the city, the sandstone cliffs and table mountains of Saxon Switzerland rise along the river, their trails reaching viewpoints over the Elbe valley.
Dresden's museums, opera house, and riverside promenades give the city a rhythm built on art and craft as much as on history.
