Ulm sits on the Danube in Baden-Württemberg, built around the Ulm Minster, whose 161-metre steeple is the tallest of any church in the world. The tower's 768 steps lead to a platform with views over the old town and the river below. Beneath the Minster, the Fischerviertel keeps its half-timbered houses along narrow canals. Albert Einstein was born in Ulm, and a memorial marks the site of his birthplace.
