Freiamt is a cluster of hamlets scattered across wooded hills and open pastures in the central Black Forest, in Baden-Württemberg. Farmhouses built in the traditional Schwarzwald style, with deep eaves and heavy timber frames, stand apart from each other along ridges and in shallow valleys, surrounded by meadows and spruce forest. The area has long depended on dairy farming and forestry, and many of the old farmhouses are still working farms today. A network of marked trails links the hamlets and climbs through the forest to viewpoints over the surrounding hills, used by walkers through the seasons. Small guesthouses and inns serve regional dishes built around cured Black Forest ham and other smoked specialties, often made with pork and produce from nearby farms. The pace here is set by the farms and the forest, and the scattered layout keeps quiet lanes and open views close to every hamlet.
