Wihr-au-Val sits in Haut-Rhin, Alsace, where the Fecht river leaves the vineyard-covered hills behind and the land begins to climb toward the Munster valley. Half-timbered houses line its narrow streets, and small family wineries open their cellars for tastings of local wine grown on the surrounding slopes.

Paths lead out from the village into both landscapes it borders: vineyard rows on one side and wooded foothills of the Vosges on the other. The grape harvest in September brings extra activity to the wineries, while spring blossom on the vines and the quieter winter months show a different side of the same place. Regional bistros serve Alsace dishes alongside the local wine, and the traditional half-timbered architecture, common across this part of Alsace, gives the streets their character.
