Celles-sur-Ource sits among the vineyards of the Côte des Bar, the southern district of Champagne. The village is known for its concentration of small, independent growers who tend their own vines and bottle their own champagne. The Ource river runs close to the village, and the surrounding hills are patterned with vine rows that follow the slope of the land. Streets of stone houses lead between cellars where growers open their doors for tastings, and the pace of the place still follows the vineyard calendar: pruning in winter, flowering in early summer, harvest in September. Paths climb the hillsides above the rooftops, opening onto views across the vine-covered slopes that define this corner of southern Champagne.
