Bar-sur-Seine is a market town in the Côte des Bar, the southern part of the Champagne region where Pinot Noir is the grape that shapes the landscape. Vineyards climb the slopes around the town. Small growers run much of the wine trade here, many selling directly from their own cellars.
The town itself sits on the Seine, with a compact centre built around a covered market hall. Half-timbered houses line the surrounding streets around the old town centre. A weekly market brings local cheese, bread and produce together with the wine.
Around the town, the Côte des Bar continues as a landscape of vineyards and small villages, extending south into the Aube countryside, giving Bar-sur-Seine a natural role as a base for exploring southern Champagne.
