Mittersill is a compact market town in the Pinzgau region of Salzburg, sitting in the broad Salzach valley between the Kitzbühel Alps to the north and the Hohe Tauern to the south. The town is dominated by Schloss Mittersill, a medieval castle perched on a wooded hillside above the valley floor, once owned by the archbishops of Salzburg and today operating as a four-star castle hotel with impressive views over the surrounding mountains. Mittersill is also home to the main visitor centre for the Hohe Tauern National Park, one of the largest protected areas in the Alps, making it a genuine base for exploring high-mountain landscapes. The Felberturm, a medieval tower museum in the centre of town, tells the history of the Salzburg trade routes. The Krimml Waterfalls, one of Europe's highest, are just 30 km west.
