Senftenberg sits in the Kremstal, one of Lower Austria's wine regions, where terraced vineyards climb the slopes above the village. Above the houses, the ruins of a medieval castle mark the skyline, its old walls open to walkers who come for the view over the vine-covered hillsides. The wine here rests on Grüner Veltliner and Riesling. Many of the vineyards are still worked by families who have tended the same slopes for generations, and several open their cellars for tastings alongside the local heurigen, the seasonal wine taverns that serve simple food to go with the new vintage. The village keeps a quiet, working rhythm, with tractors moving between the rows and cellar doors propped open during harvest. Paths lead from the center up through the vines to the castle ruin and on into the woods above.
