Gumpoldskirchen is one of Austria's best-known wine villages, set among vineyards in the Thermenregion south of Vienna. The village gives its name to two indigenous grape varieties, Zierfandler and Rotgipfler, both suited to the local limestone soils. Vineyards rise above the village, framing narrow streets lined with old wine taverns, known locally as Heurige, where growers serve their own wine alongside simple local food. Many buildings hold wine cellars cut into the hillside beneath them. The village square and surrounding lanes keep a compact, historic character, with courtyards opening onto vine-covered slopes. Wine has shaped local life here for generations, and the rhythm of the harvest still marks the calendar, with new wine, called Sturm, appearing each autumn. Paths climb through the vineyards above the village, giving views back over the rooftops. The mix of grape variety, soil, and long winemaking tradition gives Gumpoldskirchen a distinct identity among Austria's wine villages.
