Falkenstein sits in the Weinviertel, Lower Austria's wine country, where rows of vines climb the low hills around the village. Above the rooftops, the ruins of Falkenstein Castle crown a rocky outcrop, its broken walls still tracing the shape of a medieval stronghold that once watched over the valley below. The castle grounds are open to walkers, who find wide views over vineyards and farmland from the highest points of the ruin.
Wine runs through daily life here. Local growers tend Grüner Veltliner and other Weinviertel varieties, and many open their cellars for tastings through the year. Paths cross the vineyards and patches of forest around the village, linking Falkenstein to neighbouring wine towns. Harvest season brings festivals marking the year's crop, and cellars fill with new wine.
The village itself keeps a quiet, working rhythm. Traditional Austrian dishes, often paired with a glass from a nearby vineyard, appear on menus at local inns.
