St. Paul im Lavanttal is a small town in Carinthia's Lavant Valley, built around a Benedictine abbey founded in 1091. Stift St. Paul remains an active monastery and is known for its art collection, assembled over centuries and including paintings and manuscripts transferred from monasteries closed during the Josephine reforms. Its library holds a substantial number of medieval manuscripts and early printed books, alongside natural history and mineral collections displayed within the abbey's Romanesque church and cloisters.
The valley around the abbey is given over to orchards, vineyards, and open farmland, with wooded hills rising toward the Koralpe range to the west. Wine growing continues in the surrounding villages, part of Carinthia's small wine-producing area. Paths through the valley connect the abbey to nearby farms and forest edges, forming an easy walking landscape.
St. Paul combines the calm of a working monastery with a wider valley shaped by centuries of agriculture, making it a quiet cultural anchor in southern Carinthia.
