Mörbisch

Mörbisch am See lies on the western shore of Lake Neusiedl, close to the Hungarian border, in the wine country of Burgenland. The village carries a Croatian-Austrian heritage that still shows in its dialect and street names, alongside whitewashed houses with painted gable ends and wooden gates leading into narrow courtyards. A wide belt of reeds runs along the shore here, separating the village from open water and sheltering much of the lake's birdlife.

Each summer the Seefestspiele Mörbisch stages operetta on a floating platform built out into the lake, using the water itself as part of the set. Outside festival nights, the village keeps to its wine-growing character. Kellerstöckl — small wine-storage cottages — line quiet lanes near the vineyards, and growers open tasting rooms where their own wines are poured. A lakeside promenade and paths through the reed belt trace the shoreline, giving views over the lake and its shallow, reed-fringed water.
