Illmitz sits at the southeastern edge of Lake Neusiedl, where vineyards give way to the open steppe of the Seewinkel. The village is home to the National Park Center, with exhibitions on the shallow salt lakes and the birds that gather here in large numbers, from avocets to spoonbills. Illmitz is also a working wine village: the warm Pannonian climate favors late-harvest sweet wines, and family-run cellars line the quiet streets, many open for tastings straight from the barrel. Vineyards spread out toward the reed beds and salt pans, giving the landscape a flat, open character shaped by both water and vine. Traditional wine taverns, called Heurigen, serve simple food alongside the local vintages. The pace here follows the seasons: spring and autumn bring migrating birds, while summer ripens the grapes that define the village's identity. Illmitz combines this wetland setting with a strong wine culture rarely found together elsewhere on the lake.
