Bernstein is a small village in the rolling hills of southern Burgenland, sitting near the Hungarian border in a quiet landscape of mixed woodland and farmland. The village is named after the amber-coloured serpentine stone mined here, one of the few places in the world where so-called Edelserpentin — a prized green gemstone — is extracted. Burg Bernstein, the highest-situated castle in Burgenland, dominates the hilltop above the village and has been a family-run hotel since the mid-20th century, offering nine guest rooms within its original medieval walls. The Felsenmuseum, a museum carved into the rock beneath the village, showcases the geology and craftwork of the local serpentine tradition. The surrounding hills are ideal for gentle walks and cycling, and the thermal spa town of Bad Tatzmannsdorf is just 10 km away.
