Bernstein is a small village in the rolling hills of southern Burgenland, sitting near the Hungarian border in a quiet landscape of mixed woodland and farmland. The village is named after the amber-coloured serpentine stone mined here, one of the few places in the world where so-called Edelserpentin — a prized green gemstone — is extracted. Burg Bernstein, the highest-situated castle in Burgenland, dominates the hilltop above the village and has been a family-run hotel since the mid-20th century, offering nine guest rooms within its original medieval walls. The Felsenmuseum, a museum carved into the rock beneath the village, showcases the geology and craftwork of the local serpentine tradition.
