Rechnitz sits in the rolling hill country of southern Burgenland, close to the Hungarian border, where vineyards climb the slopes around the town and its historic castle. The castle anchors the town centre and reflects the area's long history as a border region between Austria and Hungary. The surrounding hills are planted with vineyards producing the red wines southern Burgenland is known for, and small, family-run wineries open for tastings through the growing season. Beyond the vineyards, the Geschriebenstein rises nearby, a border peak with an observation tower, with trails leading through forest and open pasture toward its summit. Traditional Burgenland dishes appear on menus in guesthouses scattered through the town and the surrounding villages.
