Oberwesel.

Oberwesel sits inside the Rhine Gorge in Rhineland Palatinate, between Bacharach and St. Goar, and keeps nearly the whole ring of its medieval town walls intact. Sixteen towers still stand along the circuit, giving the old town a shape that has changed little in centuries. Narrow lanes run between half-timbered houses toward the market square, and the walls themselves can be followed almost end to end, with close views of the vineyard slopes that rise steeply behind the rooftops.
Above the town, Schönburg Castle sits on a wooded hill overlooking the Rhine. Parts of the fortress date back to the 11th century, and the site now combines a hotel and a restaurant in the remaining towers and halls. The views from the castle terrace stretch along the river bends, and the walk up through vineyard terraces is a quieter approach into the gorge landscape.
Oberwesel is a wine town as much as a castle town. The steep slate slopes around it grow Riesling, as across most of the Middle Rhine, but the town is unusual for also producing red wine from Blauer Spätburgunder. Small family-run wineries line the streets near the market square. Local food follows the same rhythm as the vineyards: hearty stews, cured meats, dark bread and cheese.
The Liebfrauenkirche, a red-painted Gothic church, stands at the heart of the old town and is one of the finest in the region. Nearby, the Günderodehaus holds the Stadtmuseum, a small collection covering the town's medieval fortifications, river trade and wine history.
Hiking trails lead out of town. The Rheinsteig and Rheinburgenweg both pass through the gorge, linking castles and ruins along forested ridges and vineyard paths, with benches and viewpoints at the more dramatic bends. Cycle paths follow the valley floor along the river itself, flatter and easier, linking Oberwesel to the neighbouring wine villages.
Barges and river cruise boats pass steadily below the town walls, part of the daily rhythm of the river. Spring brings blossom to the vineyard terraces and the gorge turns green quickly after a grey winter. Early autumn coincides with the wine harvest, when the slopes fill with pickers. Winter is quiet, the walls and towers standing out against bare vines and misty river air, and the town keeps a slower pace to match its size and history.
