Domat/Ems lies in the Rhine valley of Graubünden, where the valley floor opens out below the forested slopes of Mount Calanda. The town's modern identity is tied to EMS-Chemie, one of Switzerland's major chemical manufacturers, whose works have shaped the local economy for decades alongside older roots that go back to Roman times.

Despite the industrial presence, the landscape around the town stays distinctly Alpine. Steep slopes rise behind the houses, and paths climb from the valley floor into quieter hill country with views back over the Rhine. Here the river runs wide and even, a change from the narrow gorge sections found upstream near Versam.

Domat/Ems works as a base for exploring this part of Graubünden. Small villages sit along the valley, orchards and farmland cover the flatter ground, and Chur, the region's capital, is close by. The combination of working town and open countryside gives Domat/Ems a grounded, unpolished character, shaped as much by its industry as by the mountains around it.
