Spiez sits on a bay of Lake Thun, in the Bernese Oberland, with the Niesen rising across the water. Spiez Castle stands above the harbour, with vineyards terraced on the slope below.
Below the castle, the old harbour curves around moored boats, with a promenade along the water. Lanes climb from the shore past the hillside above, where paths continue into meadows and orchards.
The lake shapes most of what happens here. Swimming from the shore is a summer habit, and wine tastings are offered at local wineries through the warmer months. Paths through the vineyard rows above the water stay quiet even when the harbour fills with boats in high season.
