Motala.

Motala sits on the eastern shore of Lake Vättern, Sweden's second-largest lake, at the point where the Göta Canal opens into the water. The canal's construction in the 19th century turned the town into a center of industry, and that history is still visible around the old locks and harbor. The Motor Museum adds to that story with its collection of vehicles.

Away from the industrial history, Motala has a quieter, lakeside character. A long promenade runs along Vättern, with beaches for swimming and open views across water that stretches toward the horizon. Boats move through the canal's locks on their way between the Baltic coast and the lake, and the harbor fills with sails in the warmer months.

The lake shapes daily life here more than the canal does, with fishing boats on the water and a townscape built low and close to the waterline. Vadstena's medieval streets and the wooded ridge of Omberg lie along the same lake, making Motala part of a wider Vättern landscape worth knowing.
