Espinosa de los Monteros lies in the Merindades, a mountainous district of northern Burgos province where the land rises toward the Cantabrian range. Stone houses with carved coats of arms line its streets, a reminder that the town's monteros once served as royal huntsmen and guards to the Crown of Castile, giving the place its name. Pine and beech woods cover the surrounding hills, drained by rivers that run down toward the Ebro basin.
