Mataporquera sits on a high plateau in inland Cantabria, in the comarca of Campoo, close to the border with Castilla y León. Stone houses with deep eaves line its streets, set against hay meadows and wide views toward the surrounding sierras.
Food follows the rhythm of mountain Cantabria. Village bars and small restaurants serve cocido montañés, the bean-and-cabbage stew built around local chorizo and morcilla, alongside cured meats and firm mountain cheeses from nearby farms.
The seasons mark the plateau clearly: wildflowers fill the meadows in late spring, pastures stay green through summer, and beech woods turn copper by October before winter closes in with frost and snow on higher ground.
