Luarca sits on a sheltered stretch of the Asturian coast, where the harbour curls around low cliffs and the whitewashed houses rising above it have earned the town its nickname, the White Town. Fishing boats still work out of the port, and local seafood restaurants line the quay. Narrow lanes climb from the port to the upper town, past old merchant houses from Luarca's trading past. West and east of the harbour, the coast breaks into rocky headlands and small coves, with quieter beaches set back from the centre. Green hills rise inland, typical of the Asturian countryside, keeping the setting lush for much of the year.
