Llanes sits on Asturias' Costa Verde, where a walled medieval old town meets a coastline of more than thirty beaches and coves. Sections of the old wall still stand near the harbor, among narrow lanes of stone houses. The working fishing port is marked by the Cubos de la Memoria, a row of concrete breakwater blocks painted in bright geometric patterns.
East and west of town, cliffs give way to pocket beaches such as Toró and Ballota, divided by rock formations shaped by the Cantabrian Sea. Inland, the land rises quickly toward the Picos de Europa, whose peaks form a dramatic backdrop. Fishing hamlets and pastures fill the valleys between the shore and the mountains.
Local kitchens serve Asturian staples: fabada, cider poured from height, and seafood landed at the port. The surrounding countryside holds a network of trails into the foothills, so Llanes works equally well as a base for walking and for beach days.
