Calheiros sits among the vineyards of Portugal's Vinho Verde region, near Ponte de Lima. The village has grown up around its old manor houses and gardens, which now stand quietly among the vines. Wine estates line the lanes between the fields, where the vines are trained high in the traditional local style.
Paths lead out from the village into the surrounding hills, crossing terraced vineyards with views back over the valley. Small producers open their cellars for tastings of the young, lightly sparkling white wine the region is known for, often served alongside local bread and cheese. The wine estates are busiest around harvest, while in other months the manor gardens and village lanes are quiet.
