Pinhão.

Pinhão sits at a wide bend of the Douro River, where steep terraces of vineyards climb the hillsides on every side. The village is small, centred on a cluster of quintas that have produced Port wine for generations. Its railway station is one of the valley's best-known landmarks, its walls covered in blue-and-white azulejo panels.

The slopes around the village are planted almost entirely with vines, trained on narrow stone terraces that follow the shape of the land. Many of the quintas open their cellars for tastings, and some lead walks through the vineyards themselves. On the river below, traditional boats carry visitors on leisure trips along the water.

Harvest season brings activity to the terraces, with grape picking and, in some quintas, treading still done by hand. Outside that period, the valley settles into a quieter rhythm shaped by the sound of water and birdsong. Paths through the hills above the village open onto wide views of the river and its tight, looping curves.
