Mikołajki sits at the centre of the Masurian Lake District, a region of interconnected lakes in northeastern Poland. The town has long served as a base for sailors, and its narrow streets lead down to a marina lined with yachts, motorboats and wooden fishing boats.
Wooden architecture gives the town much of its character, and the surrounding lakes and reed-lined bays draw birdwatchers as well as sailors. Local restaurants serve lake fish alongside regional dishes.
The surrounding countryside is flat and wooded, crossed by quiet roads and paths linking Mikołajki to smaller lakeside villages. Summer brings more visitors to the harbour, while the nearby nature reserves stay quiet for birdwatching through much of the year.
