Bodegraven lies in the Green Heart, the belt of farmland and water in the middle of the Netherlands. The town has long been tied to the Dutch cheese trade, with a market tradition that still shapes its centre. Around it stretches a flat landscape of drained peatland, cut by canals and dotted with lakes. Cycling paths follow the dikes, linking the town to open countryside and smaller villages nearby. Boats share the water with grazing cattle in the fields beyond. Local shops sell cheese from nearby farms, and the lakes around town draw anglers. Bodegraven sits in a low-lying corner of South Holland, away from the busier canal towns further north.
