Sneek sits at the heart of the Frisian lakes, a network of connected waters that has shaped the town for centuries. Boatyards and marinas line its canals, and the Waterpoort, a historic water gate, still stands as one of the town's best-known landmarks.

The town's streets follow the line of the canals, with gabled houses and small bridges linking the old centre to the harbour areas. Markets and cafés sit close to the water.

Each August, Sneekweek fills the lakes with sailing boats for a week of racing, one of the region's best known sailing events. Outside that week, the same waters are quieter, used for rowing, windsurfing, and slow cruises between the lake villages.

Inland, flat polder countryside opens out from the town, crossed by paths that link Sneek to smaller villages on the lakes. The town holds together a working harbour atmosphere with the calm of the surrounding Frisian countryside.
