Sorano is one of the most striking and least-visited towns in Tuscany, clinging dramatically to a sheer spur of volcanic tufa rock above the Lente valley in the Maremma region. Its medieval streets, stacked houses, and the imposing Orsini fortress feel genuinely off the beaten track — a world away from the Chianti circuit. What makes Sorano truly extraordinary are the Vie Cave: deep, narrow roads carved into the soft tuff rock by the Etruscans, some reaching ten meters in height, still winding through the surrounding countryside today.
