San Gimignano rises on a hill in the Tuscan countryside, its skyline marked by medieval stone towers. Within the walls, narrow streets lead to the Piazza della Cisterna, a wide square at the town's centre, and to the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta.
The surrounding hills grow the grapes for Vernaccia di San Gimignano, a dry white wine. Small enotecas in town pour it alongside local olive oil and cured meats, and vineyards nearby open their cellars for tastings.
Cypress-lined roads, olive groves, and vineyards surround the walled town. Artisan workshops fill the ground floors of old stone buildings, and footpaths cross the farmland beyond the walls toward the neighbouring hilltop villages.
